About Us
Who We Are
Spruce Wood Loggers has been proudly serving Manitoba since 1981. We are committed to employing sustainable and responsible forestry practices as we produce high-quality wood products.
Our Story
Spruce Wood Loggers Inc. was founded in 1981 by Arnold & Lorraine Reimer. It began as a logging company, harvesting wood from the forests in Manitoba. The product was the logs being harvested. These were shipped to the Pine Falls mill as pulpwood. Some logs were sold as firewood. From these simple beginnings, the business has evolved over the years to where we are now: Multiple product offerings, many times the production capacity, and a steady provider of local employment.
In 1984, we expanded to milling rough lumber and timbers. With the construction of a carriage mill purchased from Arnold’s father, our product offerings expanded. Now, instead of just selling pulp logs and firewood, we were able to turn the higher quality logs into rough lumber and timbers. Our customer base was local and our footprint in the market was small. But this improvement was an early step that aided us in getting to where we are now.
In 1993, we relocated our sawmill to our current site. As Arnold and Lorraine’s family grew, so did their business. This permanent site came with other advancements - specifically in power. The mill was originally run by a tractor PTO. Later, at the new site, a Mack engine was converted to power the carriage mill. We added a roof over the mill and the durability of the business grew.
In 2002, we upgraded our mill. This upgrade included a wood chipping line as well as a small log line. To power these upgrades, we needed a new power source and purchased a diesel generator. The driving force for this upgrade was that the pulp log market had dried up. Instead of taking pulp logs, our main customer shifted to only receiving wood chips. So, we needed to adapt. This upgrade was a big risk, as it was costly and our footprint in the market was small. However, it has paid off proving to be worth the risk.
This mill has seen many upgrades and additions over the years. The roof grew and received walls. Our diesel generator was later replaced with 3-phase electric power (a major upgrade since Hydro had to extend their nearest 3-phase line 10 miles just to get to our site.) With all these upgrades and many more, the mill we pieced together then is the mill we use today. The carriage mill sits in the back corner of our main sawmill building and we still put it to use a couple times a year to process the bigger logs that our main mill is not suited to process.
With this upgrade, we were able to significantly increase our footprint in the rough lumber market. If you purchased pine furniture from Defehr Furniture, chances are that wood came from us. For many years we sent them rough lumber that they dried, finished, and turned into furniture. Another main market for our rough lumber is the dunnage market. We have a long history of providing quality dunnage for Interlake- and Manitoba-based manufacturers.
Since 2020, our operations have grown significantly. We added a kiln for lumber drying and a planer for lumber finishing. We received our certification from CFPA that allows us to produce and sell graded lumber. (If you see CFPA 35 on the stamped lumber, it came from our mill.) These additions enabled us to enter the finished (S4S) lumber market. We now produce S4S 2x4s and 2x6s, Tongue & Groove pine boards, and grooved dunnage. In 2025, our planer building moved from part-time operation to full-time operation when we added a resaw and took on an ongoing remanufacturing work contract.
When the Pine Falls paper mill shut down in 2005 our main customer for wood chips disappeared. So, we needed to pursue other markets. Enter the engineered wood fiber market. In connection with Zeager Bros. Inc, we provide a biodegradable, renewably sourced offering for the playground bedding application. In the spirit of renewably sourced offerings, we added a pellet mill in 2019, where we produce wood heating pellets that offer a renewable energy alternative to conventional heating methods. These are packaged as Northern Prime Wood Pellets and can be purchased from our dealers (see dealer list in the products page).
In 2022, Arnold & Lorraine’s sons Charles and Scott became the second generation of Reimers to own the business. With a renewed vision, they have expanded Spruce Wood Loggers’ product offerings, increased the number of employees, and grown the business. They carry on their parents' legacy by maintaining a commitment to provide quality wood products while prioritizing environmental sustainability.
Mission Statement
To provide quality wood products that support industry, development, and sustainability in our local community, home province, and beyond. We work closely with Manitoba Sustainable Development and are dedicated to sustainable forestry practices. These practices help protect forest health, reduce wildfire risk, and maintain the ecological balance of the regions where we harvest wood.
